Summary

In Chapter 8, "A Shadow of the Soul,” Will is not at the Institute the next morning. Jessie refuses to participate in the training again. Tessa hears Bridget singing her morbid ballads as she gets ready. In the training room, Sophie assures Tessa that Will often disappears for days at a time. Gabriel and Gideon hear that comment and Gabriel says, “I hope he's dead” (163). Tessa is angry but Gabriel refuses to say why he hates Will. Gabriel is usually patient with Tessa, but he is abrupt. When he puts his hands on her to show her how to stand, Tessa becomes angry, saying he is not behaving appropriately.
