Chapter 14 Summary

Knowing Athens has failed, Dr. Griffith curses Dr. Ammon, sure he was the one who contacted the intruders since they have his key. Telling himself not to panic, he sends Dr. Kinneson with a hidden pistol and responses to questions that he suspects they will ask. Though he knows the whole scenario is risky, Dr. Griffith assures himself that "the righteousness of his work would see him through this invasion" (page 195). Karen is still able to walk and understand some of what her teammates say, but Rebecca fears it will be too late even if they manage to find the cure. She believes they will lose Karen within an hour and worries about John and Steve being so close as she could easily bite one of them. As they reach a large cavern opening into five smaller tunnels, all hope for Karen dies...
