Chapters 1 and 2 Summary

In Chapter 1, the novel opens in the school cafeteria, where friends Zoey, Shaunee, Damien and Erin are talking about a new girl at school. It is also Parent's day at the school, so most of the students are awaiting a visit from their families. While Erin and Shaunee's parents are not visiting, Damien's and Zoey's are, so they head off to the ballroom where the students meet with their parents. Zoey's mom, stepfather and grandmother meet her there. When Zoey's mom sees the Mark and Neferet explains what it is for, John speaks against the House of Spirit beliefs. Neferet demands his respect while he is in her "home" just as she respects his beliefs. Neferet requires John to choose tolerance or to leave and never return. He chooses to leave and never return and Zoey's mother follows him.
