Chapter 16 Summary
Phyllida and Lucifer return to the ball and try to lure the attacker, using Phyllida as bait, while Jonas and Lucifer keep an eye out. However, when no one comes forward, Phyllida breaks her agreement with Lucifer and leaves the ballroom with Mr. Appleby. She feels that Appleby is safe because he should have had duties in the ballroom as he works for the Fortemains. Lucifer promptly marches out to the balcony to usher her back in.
Lucifer and Phyllida, having no luck in their investigations at the ball, travel north to ascertain whether a stranger traveled in to town from this way last Sunday. While they are out, Phyllida must talk to a man at the revenue office. She leaves a lasting impression on Lucifer.
