When Lucifer and Phyllida arrive back at the Grange, they find that Lady Huddlesford has thrown an impromptu party. Many of the locals that Lucifer has yet to meet are in attendance. Phyllida uses the opportunity while Lucifer is busy mingling to talk to Mary Anne. She tries to make Mary Anne see that it is important to tell Lucifer about the love letters. Mary Anne is not so sure. She tells Phyllida that she must talk to Robert before she can give her permission.
