Chapter 4 Summary

Helen Bragg does not want to leave with the children because it makes her feel like a deserter. Mark wants them to leave because they live in a primary target area. She wants to stay with him but does not realize he will be underground in the Hole and she will be on the surface exposed. She believes her job is to stay with him but Mark says her job is to survive and care for the children. Ben Franklin and Peyton are on the other side of the terminal and excited about having a dollar to spend, getting out of school a week early and spending Christmas in Florida. Mark assures Helen she can return when it is safe. Their flight is announced and the children join Mark and Helen to go to the gate. Ben quietly asks his father if this is an evacuation and Mark answers it...
