Chapters 12 - 21 Summary

Various boats come to the island at different times bringing mail and supplies. Una's parents come to visit when she is fourteen years of age. Her father still expects her to live according to scripture. The families meet in New Bedford and the first thing Ulysses does is to find an acceptable church. The two families spend a week touring the sights of New Bedford. Una climbs to the top of the lighthouse when she returns to the island. She knows she is free.

In chapter twelve, Agatha and Jonathan take the girls to Boston on vacation. They see the sights and the girls learn how city folk live. When they return to the island, Frannie becomes ill with smallpox and Una prays to the lighthouse.
