Epilogue Summary

Hugh and Maisie learn of Edward's death from the newspaper. He had been living in France with Augusta who was confined to a wheelchair with a slipped disc. They are on their way to a ceremony at Windfield, where Bertie and Toby are students. They meet Ben Greenbourne who tells them that he is there to see his grandson. Maisie and Hugh have been married for a month and Ben offers to pay for Bertie to attend university.

Hugh's plan for the syndicate and the plan for Cordova result in all of the creditors being paid off, which enhances Hugh's name in financial circles. He is thinking of opening a new bank.

Before leaving Windfield, he goes out to see the quarry pool where it all began. He and Albert Cammel are the only ones still alive.
