Summary

The opening scene appears before Chapter 1. Nesta Archeron sees her sister, Elain, and knows she has been Made into a faerie. Nesta is being shoved into the Cauldron where she will also be Made. Cassian is nearby, but too hurt to move. The water in the Cauldron is freezing. Nesta points her finger at the King of Hybern as she is pushed under. “She tore into the darkness with talons and teeth” (3), and laughed at the magic recoils.

Part One is titled Novice. Chapter 1 opens with Cassian at the door of Nesta's apartment in the Night Court city of Velaris. He takes on “a traditional fighting stance” and knocks.
