Objective

Objective: SWEET BIRD OF YOUTH is a 1950s American play written by Tennessee Williams. The aim of this lesson is to introduce the play.

1. Class discussion. Have the students heard of the play before? What do the students expect from the book? Why do they expect these things to happen?

2. Brainstorm Tennessee Williams' past works with the students. Do his plays share similar themes? Divide the students into pairs and assign them each a book to research. On their return, discuss what the students expect from SWEET BIRD OF YOUTH?

3. With the students look at the questions that Williams asks in the opening chapter of the novel. Divide the students into pairs and ask the students to write down five questions Williams poses in the opening chapter.
