Act 1, Scene 1

• The play opens in a room at the Royal Palms Hotel in the town of St. Cloud. A handsome young man called Chance Wayne gets out of bed while the woman lying next to him sleeps.

• After a waiter leaves with Chance's coffee, a man called George Scudder enter the room. Scudder tells Chance the hotel manager phoned him to say Chance was back in town.

• Chance tells Scudder he has come to town to be with his dying mother, but when Scudder tells him his mother is already dead, it becomes apparent Chance has come back for his old girlfriend, Heavenly.

• George tells Chance if Heavenly's powerful father knows he is in town there is no telling what he could do. He suggests Chance leave as soon as possible.

• The woman in Chance's room wakes up, asking for her oxygen mask. She breathes heavily until...
