Objective

Chapter 1-3

The objective of this lesson is to prepare the students for the themes and subjects presented in the novel. Mother Night contains material of a sensitive nature. The value of this book is that it can create a venue in which issues of bias, bigotry, racism, and genocide can be explored compared to historical events. Without giving too much away, tell students that this novel presents characters with a wide variety of beliefs about "hot topic" issue such as war, genocide, and racism and that, like the characters in the novel, the students themselves may have a wide array of beliefs regarding these subjects. Help the course get off to a good start by establishing an academic safe zone where students can discuss these issues openly and in such as way as to produce useful discourse and productive learning opportunities.
