1. How has U Po Kyin risen to power?

U Po Kyin began as a clerk for a rice merchant, then stole or mishandled enough money to buy a government clerkship. Later he denounced his fellow clerks so that he might acquire a position as a minor official. He had "risen steadily" since that point.

2. What attitude does U Po Kyin have about his fatness?

U Po Kyin is proud of his fatness. He believes he looks wealthy and that his size is indicative of his power. He also admires the way he looks in his clothing which implies he is content with his size. Though it is difficult for him to move about by himself, U Po Kyin is not at all inconvenienced by this as his friends and servants help him move about.

3. What is U Po Kyin's plan against Dr. Veraswami?

He plans to discredit Dr. Versawami by slandering his name and reputation. He also plans to persuade Europeans that Dr. Veraswami is disloyal to them because Veraswami will not be bribed, knows all of U Po Kyin's intrigues, and somehow "stands in [his] way."
