Jacintha “Jack” Cross

Jacintha “Jack” Cross is the first-person narrator of the novel. Jack is the prime suspect after her husband, Gabe, is murdered. The suspicion against Jack is even stronger when Jack receives an email stating that a joint life insurance policy in her and Gabe’s names is in effect.

Jack is determined to find out who killed Gabe and why so she sneaks away from the police station where she is being questioned. She feels the only thing she has to live for is finding out the identity of the killer. She also believes the police will not look for the actual killer if they arrest her.

Jack additionally does not trust the police because she once dated a police officer. Jeff was abusive. When Jack tried to break off the relationship with Jeff, he retaliated by giving her parking tickets for places she had never...
