“You’re” was written in 1960, the year that Sylvia Plath was pregnant with her first child, Frieda Hughes (who also grew up to be a published poet). The poem explores Plath’s conflicting feelings, particularly her sense of wonder, towards the new life growing inside her. The title is implied to begin each sentence of the poem, with each line being a colorful description of the speaker’s unborn child. The poem ends on a note of hope for the child’s unwritten future.
