Summary

Chapter 3 opens with Lieutenant Jack receiving an assignment from Captain Vrettos to conduct traffic stops at a checkpoint in order to meet a quota. Once at the checkpoint, Jack notes the way Chambers orders the men around and begrudgingly admits to himself that the Sergeant is effective at instilling discipline in the men. Chambers then demonstrates to the men how to conduct a search on a local man with a lip sore driving a rusty station wagon.

Afterwards, Jack and Chambers meet under the shade of the checkpoint shack where Jack asks Chambers about his family. Chambers reveals that he is 30 years old with two ex-wives and four children, and that he is currently in a relationship with an intelligence officer named Sergeant Griffin at Camp Independence, the large Forward Operating Base nearby to the east.
