Memories

The concept of memories of the past is used throughout the novel to move the plot forward as well as thematically connect Ben and Rose. Both Ben and Rose are held back by their attachment to the past and the way things were. Until they can break free from their memories and posture themselves towards the future they are unable to grow as people. Ben’s attachment to memories is shown through his museum box and resistance to learning sign language while Rose’s attachment is shown in her relationship to her mother.

Ben’s museum box represents Ben’s relationship to his deceased mother. He is very attached to the box and panics when he thinks he has lost it. He had never shown anyone the contents of the box as he felt the items were only meant for him and his mom to enjoy...
