Soul Mates

In the previous novels of this series, the author has introduced the idea that the master of Dark has a counterbalance, or soul mate, who is meant to be his mate. This person has a calming effect on the pain that is brought on by the work the Master of Darkness must do. The one time a Master of Dark lost his counterbalance, he went crazy and allowed the Darkness to take him over. This man, Bartholomew the Terrible, still exists as a soul who can enter the bodies of witchlings. Bartholomew still wants to grow the Darkness and destroy the Light.
