Summary

In Chapter 47, Maggie struggles not to throw up because of the smell of Rumpus's vomit. It takes 20 minutes to get to Fred's, “but it felt like forever” (299). Dawn is breaking as Fred lowers the ramp. He is in awe of Rumpus's beauty. Maggie coaxes Rumpus into the pen. Maggie lies down near him. Maggie wakes when a taxi arrives with her parents. Maggie hugs her mother. Aware of how dirty she is – including being covered in Rumpus's vomit – she does not hug her father. She can tell he is disappointed when she stutters out a greeting. Fred hugs Evelyn and shakes Vincent's hand. Maggie can tell Vincent is angry. Vincent tells Maggie to go clean up. Evelyn stops her, producing Wellington the mouse from her pocket.
