Summary

Chapter 11 and Chapter 12 change back to Byatt's perspective. In Chapter 11, Byatt recalls an incident when she was 10 in which she told a lie about making a new friend named Erin, and then told everyone that Erin died. She perpetuated the story because of how she enjoyed manipulating others. Byatt never set out to tell these lies. Her mother decided to send her to Raxter for a fresh start. Byatt realizes that not talking makes it easy for her to manipulate her situation. Paretta explains that a resonate frequency is the “frequency at which a particular object vibrates” (159), and that is why a specific sound can break glass. Byatt's voice now operates at the correct frequency to vibrate bones. Paretta says nothing hits that frequency except Byatt's voice.
