Summary

In Chapter 9, written from Hetty's perspective, Hetty wakes with a headache and wonders if it is a sign of another impending flare-up. Hetty wonders if Byatt could be in the Headmistress's office, “one of the last places left we're still not supposed to go” (134), and becomes determined to search it later. When Welch begins handing out food that morning, Hetty wonders if she has been with Byatt. By now, Hetty knows Welch is good at keeping secrets. Hetty is still coping with her guilt over the food she helped throw away, and she feels she does not deserve any of the food that morning.
