Summary

In Chapter 13, Franka and John decide to head to her uncle Hermann's house, which is on the way to Switzerland. This is the same uncle whose cabin Franka's family used as their summer home after buying it from him - i.e. the same cabin that John and Franka have been staying in so far. Franka tells John that they can certainly trust Uncle Hermann to not go to the Gestapo immediately. Franka takes the casts off John's legs a week early and they hide Daniel's body under the floorboards before driving to her uncle's home. They sneak in with a spare key and in the morning Franka tells her uncle that she got lost hiking while John hides in a bedroom. After a quick lunch, she sneaks John out past her uncle again and they walk in silence through the snowy forest...
