Mas

Masaru “Mas” Ito is the older brother of Shig and Minnow, and serves as the character whom all the other characters look up to. Mas serves to intersect all the major themes as featured most prominently in his chapter - Chapter XI “Twice as Perfect” (226). Like Twitchy, Chee waits until later on in the novel to write a chapter from Mas’s perspective to build up the reader’s adoration and affection for Mas as a character and leader. However in Mas’s chapter, Chee writes with a unique sensitive and doubtful perspective showing that even the character all the other characters look up to has his flaws, and has his doubts and worries.

Minnow describes Mas in Chapter I as “big and handsome and a lot more serious than he should be at twenty years old” (5). Frankie describes him as “Japanese Captain America” while Aiko compares him...
