Summary

In Chapter 43, after Nicola paid Alfie for his job, Alfie sent Joey out for champagne. Joey ran into Tom. He walked her home. In the street, Tom revealed his feelings for Joey, asking her to touch him again. While they touched, Joey realized they could, “with very little risk of being caught, have sex” (193). However, when a car passed, she jerked away.

In the morning, Joey stood in the yard and studied Tom’s house, filled with “guilt,” “lust,” and “jealousy” (194). Afterwards, she visited the cemetery and told her mom what had happened with Tom.

In Chapter 44, Jenna worried when Bess missed multiple days of school. She confronted her when she returned. Bess revealed that she might be pregnant.
