Bybanks, Kentucky

The story begins in Bybanks, Kentucky, which is apparently a town of the author’s imagination. This is where Sal lives with her parents prior to the death of her mother. It’s interesting that the home town of Sal and her parents is fictional but several other specific settings in the book are real. Sal's home is described as a typical farm in the country.

Euclid, Ohio

Euclid is near Cleveland, Ohio. Sal and John live in Euclid for awhile after Sugar's death. The house Sal shares with her father here is described as being very small with a tiny yard. Sal hates living here at first though she settles in with friends and school.

Lewiston, Ohio

Sugar is buried in Lewiston, Ohio. The town is a short distance from the mountainside where the bus wrecked, killing everyone on board except Margaret Cadaver.
