Santa Clara

Many of the significant events in Violeta occur at Santa Clara, a farm in the south of the country. Santa Clara is originally owned by the Rivases, who welcome the Del Valle family to their home after the Del Valles suffer financial ruin. The farm is “a small property, just large enough to support the family and provide a surplus of products, such as honey, cheeses, and cured meats, to trade or sell in the neighboring towns” (61). Violeta spends much of her adolescence at Santa Clara and continually returns to the property throughout her life. Santa Clara becomes Violeta’s most authentic and meaningful home; as she approaches death, Violeta chooses to return, at last, to the farm.
