Summary

Chapter 6

On their way to St. Louis in Chapter 6 Evan notices how somber Maise is but doesn’t say anything. Once they are in the loft, he asks her what is wrong. She cries, then tells him they have to stop. She explains that her mother is a drug dealer. She tells him she might be on a hit list somewhere. Evan tells her he plans to cook for her and then she can re-evaluate if she wants to break up with him. Maise later learns that Evan’s mother was an alcoholic. She had basically ruined their family. He tells how his little sister had drowned in their family pool because his mother was passed out drunk at ten in the morning instead of watching her. He believes they are attracted to one another because they both lost their childhoods.
