Summary

Chapter 1

This part of the novel switches back to the story of the Heldts, Stephanie, Sarah Jane, and Lisa. It opens with a return to Jeremy’s discovery of Ezra’s accident. Jeremy is covered in blood, showing up at Lisa Sample’s door to find Sarah Jane. Sarah Jane is horrified at the scene, and Jeremy quickly explains that the blood is Ezra’s, and that Ezra has been in an accident. Though flustered that Jeremy has found her at Lisa Sample’s house, Sarah Jane lets Jeremy in, gets him a glass of water and has him recount what happened. Jeremy is suspicious of her, given that Ezra would never ordinarily have a reason to come out that way. He resents the seemingly phony surprise Sarah Jane affects: “What was he doing all the way out here?” (137). It seems...
