Chapter 8

Sarah Jane returns to Video Hut after a long string of absences. She claims she was sick and tries to avoid as many questions as she can by suggesting she has been having trouble keeping food down. Jeremy recalls the past week, working 40 hours at the Video Hut because of Sarah Jane's absences. Ezra, who normally is not scheduled to work often and has a long commute from his family's farm, has also been in frequently. "Ezra didn't usually get this much contact with the outside world; it made Jeremy feel obligated to protect him. On duty, they hardly ever exchanged more than a few sentences, but the governing silence between them was the regional grammar of comfort between like-minded men" (46).
