Summary
In Chapter 7, “And twenty-four months before that . . . ,” two years prior, Neon’s grandfather Earl Wednesday passed away. At the funeral, Gammy gave Neon Grandy’s old wallet. Crying, Neon put it in his pocket.
Then Reverend Creeks began his sermon. While the guests listened, prayed, and sang, Neon remembered his favorite times with Grandy. At the cemetery, Neon kept thinking about his past experiences with Grandy, too. Grandy’s favorite actor was Denzel Washington. He and Neon used to eat French fries and watch Denzel’s movies together. One night, Grandy insisted that Denzel “should do more romances” (209). He thought that falling in love was one of the best ways to change a person. He then told Neon about his past. While serving in the military, his buddies kept his body from danger.
