Treacle Walker

Treacle Walker's character is symbolic of wisdom. Throughout the novel, Treacle Walker assumes the role of Joe's guide and teacher. However, his character is subversive by nature. He does not urge Joe towards adulthood, but encourages him to continue seeing the world in whatever imaginative way he chooses. Joe learns to come to him for advice and guidance, even if he does not often understand the Treacle Walker's rhymes and riddles.

Lazy Eye

Joe's lazy eye is symbolic of perception. Although the lazy eye is a real medical condition, in the context of Treacle Walker, Joe's lazy eye is a form of enchantment. It allows him to see the world in a distinct and fantastical way. The author uses the eye, and the alternate version of reality it presents to Joe, as a way to comment upon the relativity of truth and reality.
