House

Joe's house is one of the novel's primary settings. The house is situated in a remote area in an indistinguishable geographical location. Allusions to hillocks and heaths, however, suggest that Joe lives in the English countryside.

The house is made up of three rooms. The rooms are mostly empty, with the exception of the chimney, Joe's mattress, his museum of curios, and his comic books. Joe spends the majority of his time on his mattress, which is located on top of a cupboard near the chimney. He must stay inside when it is sunny out, because the light and heat bother his eyes. The closer he becomes with Treacle Walker, the more often Joe invites him into the house. The more immersed he becomes in his comics, the more often the characters also visit the house.
