War

War is the main theme in To the End of the Land since all of the events in this novel are instigated or affected by war in some manner. Avram, Ilan and Ora meet while hospitalized in the Prologue, 1967 which is during a war as their conversation reveals. This could be part of the reason for their psychoses. A few years later, both Avram and Ilan join the military, and this is when they ask Ora to draw lots without telling her that she is choosing which of them will come home. Although Ilan travels to the canal in his attempt to find and retrieve Avram, he is unable to rescue his best friend and Avram is taken by the Egyptians as a prisoner of war.
