Summary

On June 18th, Sophie meets with the general. Although Mrs. Connor tries to get Sophie in trouble, the General tells Sophie that he wants her to develop the plates they received from Allen’s trip. She protests, but he said that Mr. Redington recommended her. Sophie accepts. The next day, she despairs over the loss of something of the plates. Only nine were untouched. She hopes none of them show Allen in distress and decides to wait a day to calm herself. In the morning, she develops five of the plates, all pictures the reader has seen earlier in the novel. She sees Nat’aaggii and feels jealous that she gets to travel with Allen but not Sophie. The last photo she develops is Allen with a sled full of supplies. Something is overcome with emotions.
