Summary

This chapter continues where the last chapter left on in Xavier's narration, with Thompson deciding that the rain will be good cover for their raid. Xavier and Elijah are told to approach the machine gun nest as soon as the box barrage starts and to drop Mills bombs to kill the Germans then plant cotton charges to completely destroy the nest. Thompson sends up a signal flare and the barrage begins as the Germans fire on Thompson's position. Xavier and Elijah can both tell that the Canadian bombs land too far behind to do any good. Elijah and Xavier advance on the machine gun and Elijah tells Xavier in Cree that he is going to make his move. Something feels wrong to Xavier as a Mills bomb explodes in the nest.
