Summary

The chapter begins with Xavier as the first person narrator. The rain falls on the sand all around him and the wet wool of his uniform emits an animal like smell that tries to pull him back to the battlefield. Xavier does not want to go back there. He cannot rest because every time he does, dead friends from the war come visit him, accusing him of acts he did not perform. Some of the me did but all soldiers acted in ways that should not be spoke of. Especially Elijah, he was truly skilled even though no one remembers that Xavier was the better marksman. Xavier wonders where Elijah is since they spent the whole war together only to lose each other within the ending days. He remembers that a shell landed too close to him and threw him in the air...
