Summary
Act One Scene Four begins in the Members Lobby as Harper and Silvester organize another round of pairing ahead of a vote. They discuss a recent scandal involving Liberal leader Jeremy Thorpe. The vote takes place and the government lose by one vote.
In the Government Whips’ Office, Mellish reveals the news that the Prime Minister is unexpectedly planning to step down midterm. This is Harold Wilson although, as is the case throughout the play with characters from outside of the Whips’ offices, he is referred to by his role rather than his name. During the discussion Mellish receives a phone call informing him that Walsall North has been found alive.
