Summary

The chapter opens the morning after the end of the previous chapter. Detectives Rafferty and Kerr arrive at Ivy House, and talk to Toby alone. They reveal that a cord from a sweater was used to garrote Dominic, and tell Toby that they are almost certain that the cord was from Toby’s sweater since they have a photo of him in a sweater without a cord. Thus the detectives imply that they suspect Toby of killing Dominic in revenge for his bullying of Leon; Toby realizes that he has “gone from a suspect to the suspect” (296). After the detectives leave, Toby begins to suspect that Leon killed Dominic, and that Toby’s attack was ordered by Leon, in order to make Toby a more attractive suspect since his brain damage has made him less credible.
