Malta Kano asks Toru if he's been away for the last couple of days. She continues, telling Toru that she recently lost touch with her younger sister, Creta Kano, and asks if he has seen her. He says no but that if he happens to run into Creta, he will relay the message that Malta Kano wishes to speak to her. Toru Okada leaves the house and climbs the cinder-block wall and starts down the alley. His watch says it is three o'clock in the morning.
