Summary

Chapter 7 is titled “Zubinsk.” Many go to Zubinsk because they hope to see the Rebbe. Many are members of his Hasidim (followers). The Rebbe is more powerful because he has a “fragment of the soul of each and every one of his devoted Hasidim” (132). Because of that, each follower feels complete only when he is near his Rebbe. Zubinsk is soon overflowing with guests who sleep and stay anywhere they can. They sing, pray, and drink in groups. One group includes Fishl, Mendl, Velvl, and Reuveyn. The invite the Dark Messenger to join them, calling him “friend.” They introduce themselves but the Dark Messenger does not identify itself. They accept its reluctance to give specifics.
