Summary

In “Bullet Number Five,” Lily and Hawley sat at the train station waiting for Mabel Ridge to arrive. She was supposed to be on the 10 a.m. train, but she was not at the station. Hawley watched the numbers change on the clock in the dashboard. Hawley had sensed from the beginning that Lily’s mother would be difficult. He was glad when Lily told him they should go back to the woods and wait until the next train arrived.

As Hawley and Lily sat in the truck, Hawley remembered how he and Lily had gone to another diner after the doctor tended to his wounds. They had talked until the diner closed. They had fallen in love. Hawley could not believe the way his luck had changed. They were married at a city hall in Maryland.
