January Scaller

January Scaller is the narrator of the main portion of this novel. She is the daughter of Ade Lee Larson and Julian Scaller aka Yule Ian Scholar. January was born in the world of the Written. She is described as having skin the color of cedarwood with light eyes. Her hair is curly and unruly. Up until she was seventeen, January lived at Locke House under the care of Locke, her guardian. January believes that her mother is dead. Her father works for Locke as a scavenger and archaeologist. He spends a good deal of time away from his daughter, he later indicates that as much as he hated leaving January alone, it was hard for him to be around her because she was so much like her mother.

Though the reader does not learn until nearly the end of the novel, January is writing this book...
