Summary

In Chapter 21, Caleb decides to help Prentiss escape from jail. Caleb takes a pistol and a horse with him, and he rides to the jail in Selby. The only guard present is Hackstedde’s deputy, Tim. When Caleb holds up his gun, Tim becomes stricken with fear. Caleb realizes that Tim also fought in the war and is suffering trauma. Caleb frees Prentiss and brings him back to George and Isabelle’s home. Caleb says he plans to flee to the North with Prentiss. George insists on going with them for part of the way, in order to guide them through the woods. In Chapter 22, after George, Caleb, and Prentiss leave, Wade Webler arrives with Hackstedde and a posse of locals.
