Summary

The novel is narrated by a woman named Jaya in the first person and told in present tense.

The book opens in the summer of 2000. Jaya begins by giving the statistics of miscarriage; she knows these statistics by heart because she miscarried twice before. At her office, where she works as a reporter, she telephones her lawyer husband, Patrick. Her silence during the conversation informs him she has miscarried a third time. At a meeting with the doctor, Jaya is eager to try to get pregnant again but she is cautioned not to try for another year at least. Patrick tells Jaya he does not want to be in a relationship anymore.

Three months later, Jaya meets Patrick for a talk. They are separated and he has moved out of her apartment. They talk about their shared history, having known each other...
