Summary

Chapter 4 returns the narrative to Max and Diane’s apartment. Max is sitting in front of the blank screen cursing to himself by repeating variations of “Jesus” and “good Christ” (41). Diane tells Max to prepare the food for halftime, but instead he goes to the liquor cabinet and pours himself another glass of bourbon. Normally, Max would announce the type of bourbon to others in the room, but this time he does not and does not offer a glass to Martin. He continues to mutter curses to himself and returns to his seat in front of the screen.

Diane turns her gaze to Martin, studying him as though he is a chapter in a book. Curious to see how Martin would respond, she quietly says, “Jesus of Nazareth” (42). He responds by saying “the radiant name” (42). Diane asks Martin what Einstein said about Jesus and...
