Summary

Chapter 2 is set in the living room of Diane Lucas and Max Stenner’s apartment in Manhattan. Diane, Max and Martin Dekker, a former student of Diane, are seated in front of a “superscreen TV” waiting for Super Bowl LVI to begin in the year 2022 (18).

Max is a gambler and has bet a lot of money on the game. The narrator describes how Max becomes engrossed in sports, especially when a lot of money is on the line. Diane sits in her own chair and between and behind them, Martin sits in a kitchen chair. Martin is an eccentric young physics teacher at a charter school in the Bronx.

Max talks to Martin about the point spread and Diane admits that she has no idea how much money Max has lost on sports bets over their thirty-seven years of marriage. She jokes that their...
