Chapter 49

At Cold Rocks Hold, Rand meets Rhuarc's second wife, Lian, who is roofmistress of the hold. She accepts him as the Car'a'carn, and they speak of the gathering of the clans to Alcair Dal. Lian tells Rand that the gathering of all of the clans will take at least one month.

Chapter 50

Rand awakens to find Aviendha in his room. He knows the Wise Ones have told her to stay close to him. Sensing something is wrong, Rand moves out into the sitting room, where a servant is being attacked by a draghkar. Rand kills the beast, but the servant is dead. Alarms sound and Rand goes outside to find Aiel fighting trollocs at the base of the ravine, and Seane, a Wise One, dead near his door.
