Summary

Chapter 23 is “Dill.” Dill begins to practice for the talent show and is surprised when he becomes excited about it. He plans to do something nice for Lydia if he wins the 50-dollar prize. When Dill is about to take the stage, Lydia urges him to look only at her and Travis. He momentarily panics but then looks at Lydia and finds courage. He briefly imagines he is in church and that his father hands him a snake. He begins to play, closing his eyes other than when he is looking at Lydia. Lydia and Travis stand and clap, but there is only “polite applause” elsewhere in the auditorium. Afterward, he offers a heartfelt prayer of thanksgiving to God for the experience. Dill is surprised when he wins first place and the prize money. Afterward, a fellow student congratulates Dill. A counselor says...
