Summary

Chapter 39

In Chapter 39, the storm wakes Sean early in the morning because of the sound of horses screaming. He wants to allow Malvern to survey the damage and realize how valuable Sean is, but he cannot permit a single horse to die because he wants to play games with Malvern. As he dresses, a groom arrives and says that Malvern told them to do it without Sean, but they cannot calm the horses. Sean ignores Mutt's presence as he retrieves Corr and calms him, whispering in his ear when Corr starts to scream. Malvern asks if Sean has changed his mind, agreeing "this changes nothing" (page 250), but Sean is not sure he believes his employer.

Chapter 40

At the end of the next day, in Chapter 40, the storm passes as Finn predicted, so the Connollys return home. Before Puck rides away on Dove...
