Summary

Time passes and Akoko's son, Obura, grows up. The tribe begins to hear rumors about the arrival of white men in Kenya. This surprises them, as they have remained relatively isolated from the influence of colonialism. Obura becomes curious about these colonists and decides he wishes to seek them out. His parents tell him he is not allowed to do so, as it is his responsibility as their firstborn son to remain in the village and take on the role of chief. Obura runs away in the middle of the night, leaving his family in distress. They send out a search party and learn that he left in an attempt to make contact with the white colonists.
